Who am I?
I am an Aussie expat living in Hong Kong since 2001. A mother of two and qualified food & nutrition teacher, nutritionist and health coach. I am passionate about providing my family with healthy, nutritious and tasty wholefoods, with the odd indulgence thrown in!
My food philosophy is all about creating and of course consuming real food made from whole, fresh, unadulterated ingredients where possible . . . homemade goodness rather than commercial, sugar and additive-laden, nutrient devoid 'foods'. My Thermomix powers this way of eating for my family and I. I am also an advocate of variety plus moderation. The benefits of eating a varied diet are enormous and of course not over-eating any one type of food or ingredient is where the moderation comes in.
You will notice that although there are no food intolerances or allergies in our household (fortunately), I love to tweak recipes to be healthier. Plus, when I have the time, I love to develop my own recipes inspired by the ingredients I know and love. This is my way of doing what I can today to nutrient my family in the best way I know how . . . but, at the same time, not becoming too obsessed with every little thing that goes into our mouths. So, although many of my recipes may sound or look familiar, most of them will be a little 'different' in some way as I endeavour to boost their nutrition. I also like to ensure that we don't over-do any one ingredient . . . . apart from of course the highly nutritious ones, which you will see frequenting my recipes :)
As a side effect of this way of eating, most of my recipes, in some way, will be suitable for people with particular food intolerances or dietary choices. For e.g. I like to use a mixture of different grains in my baking, rather than single out wheat flour. Several of my recipes are therefore gluten-free, others are dairy-free, vegetarian, even vegan. Plus I also give some advice on how they can be adapted to suit different dietary needs. Owing to my background in nutrition, I also like to provide some nutritional information or advice for getting the most out of ingredients nutrition wise. . . I call this information my 'nutrition tid bits'.
My online recipe collection is growing week-by-week and you will notice that it tends to lean more towards child-friendly, quick, convenient and nutritious snacks and meals. I hope you enjoy my blog. Please take a minute to post a message and let me know :)

Hi Paula, just curious to know if you have experimented with Stevia as a replacement for sugar in some of your sweet recipes?
ReplyDeleteHi thanks for your question and its a good one! You know I almost picked up a bottle of the stuff yesterday to have a play with it, so no, not as yet I haven't. I have been put off by the reported aftertaste, but I'm sure this is a reflection of how you use it. If you are using it, or anyone else has some experience with it, I'd love to hear about it. As the only natural non-caloric sweetener, I should give it a go :)
ReplyDeleteIf you want to experiment, my recommendation would be to use it as only one of several sweeteners, ie, to decrease the sugar content of something halve the sugar and add some stevia. I do use stevia but must admit I love my rapadura too. Nothing like that flavour...
ReplyDeleteThanks Adina for this advice! I have since started to use Stevia in raw ice-creams and for a little extra sweetness in my low-sugar cakes. If you find that my recipes are not sweet enough for you, this is a way to add a little high intensity sweetness naturally without having to top up the rapadura/sucanat :)
ReplyDeletewow!!! I am sooo glad I've stumbled on to your blog!! I love the recipes and will try them all one by one. Thank you so much.

Thanks Anita! Please let me know how you go x
DeleteHi Paula, If you have time, could you do a list of your pantry essentials? For example, the ingredients you use most and maybe a quick description about them? I am unsure of the difference between white and wholegrain spelt flours and fairly new to this nourishing lifestyle :-). And could you suggest where to get these items and what companies you use in Hong Kong. And if possible, how do you plan your weekly meals around your busy schedule. Thanks so much, Louise
ReplyDeleteThanks for your feedback Louise. You are welcome to contact me directly via my Mixing it up HK Facebook page (link on the right side) with any questions you have. A pantry essentials blog post is a great idea! I will do my best to get one up in time :)
